EN 14175 in tenders: rare
In laboratory furniture tenders since 2021, 4.7% of notices name EN 14175. The differences between years are too small to speak of a change.

EN 14175 is the European standard for laboratory fume hoods, published in several parts: from vocabulary, through safety and performance requirements, to test methods. In tender notices it is named mainly by contracting authorities that buy fume hoods: 29 of the 42 tenders whose notice names this standard are tenders with a lot for fume hoods. A notice, however, is only a summary of the tender, and the detailed requirements usually stand in the specification and the description of the subject matter.

What does EN 14175 cover?#
EN 14175 describes fume hoods and consists of several parts with different purposes. The text of the standard is paid, so the text below gives only the numbers, titles and status of the parts, taken from the entries in the catalogue of the Swedish Institute for Standards (SIS). The Swedish publisher issues the same European standards with the prefix SS, and the Polish one with the prefix PN.
- EN 14175-1 is the vocabulary, according to the entry SS-EN 14175-1 (opens in a new tab) in the SIS catalogue.
- EN 14175-2 gives the safety and performance requirements for general-purpose fume hoods, according to the entry SS-EN 14175-2 (opens in a new tab) in the SIS catalogue.
- EN 14175-3 describes the type test methods, that is, the testing of a fume hood design, and refers to EN 14175-2 for the requirements that these tests check. So says the entry SS-EN 14175-3:2019 (opens in a new tab) in the SIS catalogue.
- CEN/TS 14175-5 gives recommendations for installation and maintenance, issued as a technical specification and not as an EN standard, according to the entry SIS-CEN/TS 14175-5:2006 (opens in a new tab) in the SIS catalogue.
- EN 14175-6 concerns variable air volume fume hoods; the edition SS-EN 14175-6:2006 is listed among its standards on the page of the SIS technical committee (opens in a new tab).
The SIS entries give the status “Valid”, that is, in force, for EN 14175-1, EN 14175-2 and EN 14175-3. EN 14175-3 has an edition from 2019, which replaced the edition from 2004. The Polish editions have their own publication years, which the catalogue of the Polish Committee for Standardization gives.
EN 14175 and EN ISO 14175#
These are two different standards with a similar number. EN ISO 14175 covers welding gases and gas mixtures, as described in the entry SS-EN ISO 14175:2008 (opens in a new tab). It has nothing to do with fume hoods.
Search engines often suggest both standards together, so a mix-up is easy. The tender data below count only the EN 14175 series on fume hoods.
How often do tenders name EN 14175?#
The contract notice names a standard from the EN 14175 series in 42 of 887 tenders for laboratory furniture since 2021. That is few, but a notice is a short summary of the tender. Contracting authorities usually give standards in the tender specifications (SWZ) and in the description of the subject matter, and the data do not cover those attachments. The share of tenders that really require the standard may therefore be higher.

In no year did the notice name the standard in more than one tender in ten. Among the full years 2021 to 2025 the highest share was in 2023, at 6.7%, and the lowest in 2021, at 1.7%.
Did the share grow from year to year?#
There is no way to tell. In 2021 the notice named the standard in 2 of 120 tenders. In 2025 it did so in 5 of 203. That difference is too small to speak of a change.
The same holds for every pair of consecutive years from 2021 to 2025. In 2024 the notice named the standard in 10 of 155 tenders. In 2025 there were 5 such tenders, although that year saw the most tenders announced in the whole period. And that difference is too small to speak of a change. The year 2026 is still under way, so it is left out of the comparisons.
In which tenders does the standard appear most often?#
In tenders with a lot for fume hoods. The notice names EN 14175 in 29 of 217 such tenders. In laboratory furniture tenders without a lot for fume hoods it does so in only 13 of 670. That difference is too large to put down to chance.
EN 14175 is named mainly in tenders with a lot for fume hoods
Share of tenders (procedures with a contract notice) whose notice names a standard from the EN 14175 series, in tenders with and without a lot for fume hoods, laboratory furniture tenders, n = 887 tenders (217 with a lot for fume hoods, 670 without), notices from January 2021 to 24 September 2026, 95% intervals

Even in tenders with a lot for fume hoods, though, the notice names the standard in roughly one tender in seven. Tenders with a lot for fume hoods whose notice does not name EN 14175 may still require it in attachments that the data do not cover. What stands out is the 13 tenders without a detected lot for fume hoods whose notice names the standard. Some of them may describe a fume hood only in the body text, with no word in the title and no CPV code for extraction cabinets. Others may cite the standard for furniture placed next to a fume hood; the data do not say which case prevails.
Which parts of the standard do notices name?#
Often none in particular: in 21 of the 42 tenders with the standard, the notice gives only the series number EN 14175, without any part. In the remaining tenders with the standard the notice names at least one numbered part, sometimes next to the bare series number. Of the numbered parts, EN 14175-2 with the safety and performance requirements appears most often, followed by EN 14175-3 with the type test methods.
| Number in the notice | Scope according to the title in the SIS catalogue | Tenders with this number (n = 42) |
|---|---|---|
| EN 14175 (series number, also next to a numbered part) | the whole series | 23 |
| EN 14175-2 | safety and performance requirements | 16 |
| EN 14175-3 | type test methods | 11 |
| EN 14175-1 | vocabulary | 3 |
| EN 14175-6 | variable air volume fume hoods | 2 |
| CEN/TS 14175-5 | recommendations for installation and maintenance | 1 |
The series number alone does not tell a contractor whether the contracting authority expects compliance with the requirements of EN 14175-2, a test report according to EN 14175-3, or both.
What to put in the SWZ for EN 14175#
A requirement of the standard in the tender specifications (SWZ) is clear to a contractor when it names the part, the edition and the document that confirms conformity.
Name the part of the standard, not just the series number
EN 14175-2 sets out the safety and performance requirements for general-purpose fume hoods, and EN 14175-3 the type test methods. The bare statement “EN 14175” does not say which of them the requirement refers to.
Give the year of the edition
In the SIS catalogue the 2019 edition of EN 14175-3 replaced the 2004 edition, so a number without a year can point to different editions. The year of the current Polish edition is given in the catalogue of the Polish Committee for Standardization.
For variable air volume, add EN 14175-6
This part of the standard concerns variable air volume fume hoods, so it fits a tender for such fume hoods.
Name the document that confirms conformity
The statement “compliant with EN 14175” in a bid does not say who tested the fume hood or to which edition. The SWZ can name a document, for example a type test report according to EN 14175-3, with the year of the edition of the standard.
Check the number of the standard
EN ISO 14175 is a standard on welding gases, not on fume hoods.
General wording
- Fume hood compliant with the standard EN 14175
Wording with part, edition and document
- The fume hood meets the requirements of EN 14175-2 in the stated edition
- With the bid the contractor submits a type test report according to EN 14175-3 in the stated edition
Choosing the fume hood model itself is covered separately in the guide to choosing a laboratory fume hood. The standard for laboratory tables in the same tenders is discussed in the article on EN 13150, and the criteria for scoring bids in the analysis of award criteria for laboratory furniture.
Method and data#
The unit of the data is the tender, that is, a procedure with a contract notice, also when it has several lots. A tender announced in both the BZP and TED counts once. A “tender with EN 14175” is a tender whose contract notice names a number from the EN 14175 series, with the PN prefix or without, with a part number or without. A “tender with a lot for fume hoods” is a tender in which the title of the tender, or the description of one of its laboratory furniture lots, points to a fume hood, an extraction unit or an extraction cabinet; the full rule is given in the box below.
Frequently asked questions#
They are two different standards. EN 14175 covers laboratory fume hoods, and EN ISO 14175 covers welding gases and gas mixtures.
Among the 42 laboratory furniture tenders whose notice names the standard, the numbered parts named most often are EN 14175-2 with the safety and performance requirements and EN 14175-3 with the type test methods. In 21 of these tenders, however, the notice gives only the series number, without any part.
Yes. In the catalogue of the Swedish publisher SIS the edition of EN 14175-3 from 2019 is in force, and it replaced the edition from 2004. The year of the Polish edition is given in the catalogue of the Polish Committee for Standardization.
The contract notice names it in 42 of 887 laboratory furniture tenders since 2021. In tenders with a lot for fume hoods the notice names the standard in 29 of 217 tenders, roughly one in seven. Requirements also stand in attachments that these data do not cover.
